Climbing Every Mountain: Will Cross’s Journey with T1D
What if someone told you that having Type 1 Diabetes meant you’d never climb a mountain, run a marathon or chase an extreme dream? Will Cross was told just that- and he proved them all wrong. Diagnosed at just 9 years old, Will didn’t let diabetes define what was possible. Instead, he climbed some of the highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest, and showed the world that T1D can come along for the journey- not stand in the way of it.
Diagnosed but Undeterred
Will Cross was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 9. From an early age, he was drawn to climbing, often scaling trees and exploring the outdoors. His diagnosis didn’t deter his adventurous spirit.
In 1985, he applied for an expedition to Patagonia. Despite a warning on the application that discouraged individuals with diabetes from applying, he persisted and was eventually accepted. This experience solidified his determination to pursue mountaineering.
Reaching New Heights
In May 2006, Will Cross became the first American with Type 1 Diabetes to summit Mount Everest. He also climbed the highest peaks on all seven continents and trekked to both the North and South Poles. His achievements demonstrate that with proper management and determination, T1D doesn’t have to limit one’s aspirations.
Advocacy and Inspiration
Beyond his personal accomplishments, Will Cross is dedicated to inspiring others with T1D. He works with organisations like Tandem Diabetes on initiatives such as “What’s Your Everest,” encouraging people with diabetes to pursue their own goals and challenges. He also shares his experiences to motivate and educate others about managing diabetes in extreme conditions.
Words of Encouragement
Will Cross emphasises the importance of perseverance and self-belief. He once shared, “I was told I was going to lose my fingers and toes because of nerve damage and lose my sight, but I didn’t think so.” His journey underscores that with determination and proper care, individuals with T1D can achieve extraordinary feats.
As Will Cross proves: You’re not climbing against diabetes- you’re climbing with it, and you can still reach the summit.
