5 Big Myths about Type 1 Diabetes

Hearing the words “Your child has Type 1 diabetes” can be overwhelming. You may be wondering, Why did this happen? Did I do something wrong? Could we have prevented it? These are natural concerns, but let’s set the record straight- Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is not caused by bad diet, lack of exercise or anything a parent did or didn’t do.

As you navigate this new journey with your child- whether they are a baby, a toddler, a child or a teenager- understanding the real causes of T1D and separating fact from fiction will help you feel more confident and empowered.

X Myth #1: Type 1 Diabetes is Caused by Eating Too Much Sugar

* Fact: No amount of candy or soda causes Type 1 diabetes. While sugar does raise blood glucose levels in people who already have diabetes, it does not cause the disease. Scientists believe that viruses, gut health, and other unknown factors may trigger the immune response that leads to T1D.

X Myth #2: Kids with Type 1 Diabetes Can’t Eat Sweets

* Fact: Children with T1D can enjoy treats- just like anyone else! They simply need to balance their insulin and carbohydrate intake to keep blood sugar levels stable.

X Myth #3: Type 1 Diabetes Can Be Cured with Diet or Supplements

* Fact: Right now, there is no cure for T1D. While research is making great strides, insulin therapy is currently the only way to manage it.

X Myth #4: Type 1 Diabetes Only Develops in Kids

* Fact: While it’s more common in children, T1D can develop in adults too. This is called Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), sometimes mistaken for Type 2 Diabetes.

X Myth #5: If No One in the Family Has It, My Child Shouldn’t Have It Either

* Fact: While family history can increase risk, many children diagnosed with T1D have no relatives with the condition.

Now that you know the truth behind these common myths, you can confidently support your child (or loved one) with T1D.
