What to Expect in the Early Days
Learning Together- You’ll be working closely with your child’s endocrinology team to understand how to check blood sugar, administer insulin and manage meals. It’s a lot at first, but your don’t have to master everything overnight.
Blood Sugar Ups and Downs- It’s normal for blood sugar levels to fluctuate, especially in toddlers. Their small bodies and unpredictable eating habits make management challenging, but over time you’ll learn patterns and strategies to help keep their levels stable.

-Keep snacks handy for unexpected lows. Juice drinks are great for this age.
-Create a meal schedule that works for your child’s eating habits
-Incorporate blood sugar checks into everyday activities to make them feel less intimidating
Focus on What They Can Do
Your child can still enjoy birthday parties, playdates and family outings. With a little extra planning- bringing supplies, checking sugar levels and adjusting insulin as needed- they can live life just like any other toddler.
Build a Support System
You do not have to do this alone!
-Connect with other parents of toddlers with T1D through online communities, local support groups, or organisations like Breakthrough T1D (formlerly JDRF)
-Educate family members, daycare providers and close friends so they can help support your child’s needs.
-Lean on your child’s healthcare team- they are there to help. No question is too small.
